Attending an Initial Investigation Meeting

Before the Meeting
-
Know what it is:
This is a fact-finding meeting, not a disciplinary. It’s to explore what happened, not to decide guilt or impose a sanction. -
You may be able to bring a colleague:
Even without a union representative, you may have the right to bring a colleague for support (they don’t need to speak but can take notes and help you stay calm).
During the Meeting
-
Stay calm and professional:
Speak honestly, but avoid guessing or speculating. If you don’t know something, it’s okay to say so. -
Take notes:
Write down key questions and your responses. This is important in case the situation progresses. -
Ask for breaks:
If you feel overwhelmed, ask for a short break. You’re allowed to pause to collect your thoughts. -
Stick to the facts:
Focus on what you saw, did, or know. Avoid emotional reactions or accusations.
After the Meeting
-
Write a summary:
As soon as you can, write down what happened in the meeting, who was there, what was said, and how you responded. -
Email the NEU advice line:
If you don’t have a rep, the NEU can still help.Email: advice@neu.org.uk
Call: 0345 811 8111
-
Keep everything:
Save all emails, letters, meeting notes, and documents in one folder — paper or digital. If you need to seek support from the NEU, you will also need to gather relevant policies and your employment contract.
